May Walleye Fishing Report: 2017

Here is your May walleye fishing report for 2017. Lots of nice fish are being caught throughout the lake as the walleye make their way East. The most up-to-date reports can be found on our Lake Erie Fishing Reports page.

May Walleye Fishing Report

Get out there now as long as you have good wind.  Lots of walleye are being caught from the western basin through Cleveland.  Some of the most productive areas are SW/SE/W Kelleys, American Eagle Shoal, Middle Island, Green Island, Mouse Island, Lucy’s Point, Marblehead Lighthouse, Sandusky Bay, Vermilion to Lorain in close, and the gold coast in Cleveland.  The best area the past week has been in Lorain in 40-45 fow, there is a very nice grade of fish hanging out there right now.

Day or night it does not matter.  If you do troll at night you should be hugging the shoreline in close with shorter leads to get those feeding fish.  You should target the top 15 ft. at night with crankbaits.

Walleye Trolling

Most are trolling pretty fast unless you are running spinners you want to troll a little slower.  Cranks are being run around 1.8 – 2.5 mph, and spoons up to 3 mph.  The most productive cranks are bandits and reef runners.  With the summer pattern coming into play in just a few short weeks getting your baits deeper during the day will be key to catching the bigger fish.  This means bringing snap weights into play just like in the colder months.  I was out this past weekend and the best bait was bandits at 1.9 mph in 24 feet in the central basin sunrise and sunset.  The officers had a field day this past weekend handing out tickets for short fish.  One person I talked to said the tickets were over $100 per short fish.

If you do not troll there is a really good casting bite still going on in the same areas as the trollers.  Just be prepared to catch a lot of shorts casting.  There was one fellow I ran into who threw back 100 walleye around 14″ with 2 people in 1 day.  We hope this May walleye fishing report helps you put more fish in the boat.

May Perch Fishing Report

Their perch bite is starting to come around this month.  Outside the Huron River on the mud line was good and also out of 72nd Street in Cleveland was good this past weekend.  Most bait shops only have golden shiners right now, but the consensus is they work just as well as emeralds.  Most have their own opinions about that.

May Lake Erie Bass Report

The season remains closed until June 24th.  However, the bass fishing is very good right now.  For largemouth East Harbor is fishing very well.  The largemouth is hitting Senkos and jigs fished in the grass.  They are still guarding fry.  Smallmouth, are hanging out around 15 – 20 feet around the islands in the large boulder areas.  These areas include East Kelleys, Rattlesnake, West Reef, and the area just off of the South Bass monument.  Tubes and drop shots are winning the smallies over.

Steelhead Report

Fishing is slow right now for silver bullets.  They are making their way out to deep water for the summer.  I do not have any reports of schools hanging around feeding anywhere.  Normally in late June, they will start to school up out in deep water in the central basin and fishing can be very good.  Look for those reports in about a month.
