Erie Walleye Trolling Report | May 2018

The walleye fishing is the best it’s been in years right now.  Fast limits, short runs, and every presentation works.  The only limitation right now is the weather.  Pick a day that you are comfortable with weather-wise.  There is still a person missing and multiple boats sank this past weekend.  No fish is worth your life. Below is your Erie Walleye Trolling Report.

Erie Walleye Trolling Report

River, Shore, Jigging, or Trolling.  You pick which way you would like to catch them.  The fishing is really good right now.

Shore Locations:  Camp Perry Pier, Battery Park, Waterworks Park, Lorain Pier, Huron Pier, Edgewater, and East 72nd are all producing walleye right now.  P10’s are still the ticket just like in the fall.  There are a lot of post-spawn walleye feeding at night.  For good casting distance use a braided line and a fluorocarbon leader.

Maumee River Walleye Fishing

The Maumee River and Sandusky Rivers still have good numbers of walleye around.  The late spring has kept them going.  The Maumee is at 580 ft. with bluegrass island and buttonwood giving up fast limits.  The Sandusky is giving up just as many limits lately at the bridge in Freemont, OH.  The end is in sight however, the white bass showed up this past week.  Get those walleye while you can.

Walleye Jigging Locations

Below are the coordinates of some of the hot bites going around the reef complex.

Toussaint (n41 37.750 w83 01.200)
Crib (n41 38.830 w83 00.350)
Niagara (n41 39.850 w82 58.400)
Flat Rock (n41 39.490 w83 01.200)
Cone (n41 40.000 w83 02.850)
Little Pickerel (n41 40.150 w83 01.240)

In addition to the numbers above the following spots have been on fire this past week.

Clinton Reef
In front of Crane Creek (a lot of boat traffic)
Starve Island Reef
West Reef
Ruggles Reef

Best Walleye Baits to use

Hot baits include pink, purple, or white hair jigs tipped with a crawler or minnow.  Don’t forget the stinger hook also.  Vibe-E’s have been taking just as many fish.

Lastly, the weight-forward harness bite has just started.  Target the areas outside the reef complex.  NW Kelleys, SE Kelleys, and the chute between Catawba and South Bass can be good at times.

Walleye Trolling Locations

Edges of the reef complex, Mouse Island, Starve Island, West Reef, East side of South Bass, NW Kelley’s, Ruggles Reef, Vermilion, Lorain, and Cleveland have all been hot.  The fish are on the move fast with this incoming weather.  They are doing the dirty on the reefs and getting the heck out of dodge.  Lorain has picked up in the last week.  However, there are still a lot of post-spawn females hanging around the islands.

Bandits, Husky Jerks, P10s, Reef Runners, and Harnesses are taking most of the fish.  Pretty much any bait that can be trolled right now will catch a fish.  The key is finding the big ones!
