What You Need to Know About Fishing in Lorain Ohio

Lorain offers some of the best Lake Erie Fishing on the South shore. With both the river and lake available to fish, there is water accessible to everyone. I will give you the information you need to have a successful fishing trip to the Lorain.

The Black River in Lorain

The Black River, winding through the heart of Lorain, is a year-round fishing destination:

  • Steelhead: During spring and fall runs, the lower Black River is a good spot for Ohio Steelhead. Although the Black River is not an Ohio stocked tributary, it receives a run of stray steelhead. Enough to target them!
  • Smallmouth Sanctuary: The river’s rocky stretches hold good numbers of hard-fighting smallmouth bass. Largemouth will hang out around the mouth of the river.
  • Catfish Corner: Channel and flathead catfish prowl the deeper holes, especially at night.

Lake Erie Fishing from Lorain

Fishing Lake Erie out of Lorain is the most popular for fishermen in the area. There are two main boat launches including Hotwaters and the Black River Wharf boat launch. Both are great places to launch a boat with easy access and ramps. Hotwaters has recently been renovated in 2026. Most fishermen launching in the Black River heading towards Lake Erie are in search of walleye and perch. Both can be plentiful at times. Spring and fall are the best times to look for both species. In the summer, you will have to head offshore to find walleye.

If fishing for walleye, the dump is a popular location. It is located due North of the lighthouse. The dump is an underwater mound created from dredging material.

Diverse Fishing Opportunities

  • Lorain Harbor: Protected waters make this a great spot for perch fishing in late summer and fall. Largemouth can also be caught here in the summer months.
  • Mile-Long Pier: This local landmark offers shore anglers access to deep water. It’s great for walleye at night and steelhead in the cooler months.
  • Artificial Reef: Created to improve fish habitat, this underwater structure attracts a variety of species. These are West of the mouth of the Black River. Marked on navigational charts.

Lorain Ohio Fishing Community

Despite its industrial image, Lorain Ohio has a bright fishing community:

  • Local bait shops are treasure troves of information and local tips. Bad Boy bait and tackle is a local shop that can get you the gear you need and point you in the right direction.
  • Fishing tournaments throughout the year bring anglers from across the region. Summer bass tournaments are popular here.
  • Community efforts to improve water quality have boosted fish populations in recent years. Hotwaters has been the focus of renovations and community help in 2026.

Did You Know?: The Lorain Lighthouse, often called the “Jewel of the Port,” isn’t just a pretty sight. Its structure creates a habitat for baitfish, which in turn attracts game fish to the area.
