Best Time to Fish Lake Erie
Spring fishing on Lake Erie is unmatched. Walleye, Perch, and Smallmouth are all biting in the spring. If you want to fish all year like I do, then you will want to take a look at our Seasonal Lake Erie Fishing Guide. It’s the first chart you see on that page.
What’s Biting On Lake Erie?
- Walleye: Always biting! See our Lake Erie Walleye Fishing article to see what works and when!
- Perch: Peak Lake Erie Perch Fishing season in the Western Basin is late summer. Fish the island and can areas.
- Steelhead: Fall and Spring is peak season in the rivers. They can be caught trolling offshore in the summer.
- Bass: Peak season is ice out until ice in. Smallmouth fishing around the islands is good all season. You can catch largemouth from spring to late fall.
Lake Erie Fishing Locations & Boat Ramps
- Walleye: Catawba Island, Mazurik Boat Access, Huron, Lorain, and Cleveland all have public boat ramps. As the walleye move East, fish around Ashtabula to Erie, PA. You can fish the reefs in the western basin in the spring. Those include Niagara, Cone, and Round Reefs.
- Perch: Use Mazurik or Catawba boat ramps. Both are free and nice.

- Walleye: Medium action trolling reels with line counters. If casting, use a medium rod with braided line to a flouro leader.
