Top Small Lake Erie Towns to Explore
Here’s a closer look at my top Lake Erie small towns to visit in Ohio. I have stayed in each of these towns on fishing trips. Each has it’s own personality and features.
Port Clinton, Ohio
I frequent Port Clinton for walleye, perch, and bass fishing. It’s the top destination for walleye fishing in the spring. As the walleye make their way to the spawning grounds, the population in Port Clinton grows.
Besides the walleye fishing, the town is small and located right on Lake Erie. There are festivals to attend. If you stay downtown, everything is in walking distance.
The Put-in-Bay ferry leaves right from the Portage River in downtown Port Clinton.
Conneaut, Ohio
Conneaut is a small city in North East Ohio. This is an industry town with great fishing in late summer. You can catch walleye, perch, and steelhead in late summer here.
I choose to stay on Lake Erie outside of the town. There are plenty of hotels and private places to stay. You can even camp if you are coming up to fish.
Geneva on the Lake, Ohio
This is an old resort town located in North East Ohio, just West of Conneaut. They have a very nice marina and boat ramp. The walleye, perch, and steelhead fishing is excellent in the fall here.
The town is busy in the summer, it’s a tourist town. There are plenty of places to stay and eat in town.
Vermilion, Ohio
Vermilion is a small town in North Central Ohio. It’s a fishing town with festivals and a river to explore. The fishing here is great all year. However, in the summer you will have to go offshore due to the water temperature. Smallmouth fishing is great in close here due to the rocky shoreline. Vermilion is one of best smallmouth fishing areas.
There is a public boat launch right on the river. It’s run by the city and they charge a small fee.
Most of the restaurants and bars are located right on the river in this town. There is plenty to do here.
Huron, Ohio
Huron is my favorite place to launch and fish. The boat ramp is large and clean. There is good walleye, perch, and smallmouth fishing in the area. You can even fish the river for catfish or walleye in the fall.
There is a hotel right on the river if you are looking for a place to stay. The river has marinas with transient slips if you are looking for a place to dock for a few weeks. I know the Huron Boat Basin rents monthly in the fall.
Fairport Harbor, Ohio
I fish Fairport in the fall. There is good walleye, perch, and steelhead fishing here in the fall. They have a nice boat ramp with easy access to Lake Erie.
There are a lot of places to stay around Fairport, I choose to camp. The campgrounds are clean and have friendly people.
If you are looking for restaurants and bars, there are options in town.
