Fishing in Sandusky on Lake Erie

sandusky lake erie

I’ve spent plenty of time fishing in Sandusky on Lake Erie. It’s one of my favorite places to fish on Lake Erie. Sandusky gives me access to fish all the popular species Lake Erie has to offer. Depending on the time of year, I can find fish in different areas and use different techniques to put fish in the boat.

Where Is Sandusky on Lake Erie?

Sandusky Ohio is on the south shore of Sandusky Bay and is home to Cedar Point. Sandusky is the gateway to the Lake Erie islands and Marblehead/Catawba. It is also one of the best fishing destinations on Lake Erie.

Boating Opportunities

There are two boat ramps on Sandusky Bay that are public. Dempsey fishing access and the Shelby street boat launch. Both boat ramps are easy to use with plenty of parking. Dempsey does get shallow in late summer, just be careful.

Shore Fishing Sandusky Bay

There are plenty of shore fishing opportunities on Sandusky Bay. The city has multiple public piers. You can also fish Dempsey fishing access on the North shore of the bay. Both areas have good walleye fishing at night. You can catch bass and perch right off the piers during the day.

Fishing Hotspots in Sandusky

  • Best Fishing Areas: Sandusky Bay, Cedar Point Causeway, and shallow rock outside the channel (walleye).
  • Hot Tip:
    • The area between the bridges holds walleye in the spring and fall. In the fall, trolling or jigging around the train bridge is very productive. Be sure to read the regs if you are fishing in the spring. There are special regulations during the spawn.

What to Catch in Sandusky Bay

Walleye Fishing

Just like anywhere else, early morning and late afternoons are the best wlaleye fishing times in Sandusky Bay. However, in the colder months walleye can be caught trolling all day. Tip: Don’t troll the channel. Troll in the shallow flats, that’s where the walleye are feeding. Especially at night!

Perch Fishing

Use live bait on spreaders for yellow perch. Perch fishing in the Bay is best in the spring when they are spawning. You can find them in the summer, but you may have to search around a bit. If the winter weather allows, you can catch perch through the ice.

Bass Fishing

Bass fishing is excellent in the Bay. You can find largemouth and smallmouth. I have fished a lot of bass tournaments here. This is where the major tournaments launch. Smallmouth will stay in current areas and rocks. Largemouth can be found throughout the Bay. Especially around cover like marinas.
