Fishing in Vermilion Ohio is good all year. But if you fish there during specific times, it can be exceptional. In this article, I break down each season and target species.
Fishing the Vermilion River
The Vermilion River is the town’s namesake and one of its best fishing spots:
Steelhead Alley: In spring and fall, the river becomes part of the famous “Steelhead Alley,” with chrome-bright steelhead pushing upstream. There is plenty of public access to the river with deep runs that hold steelhead. There are different access points from Wakeman all the way to Lake Erie. One of the most popular places is the Vermilion River Reservation.
Smallmouth Heaven: The river’s rocky bottom and swift current create an ideal habitat for scrappy smallmouth bass. In the spring, smallmouth will make a spawning run up the river. This gives fishermen a unique opportunity to catch trophy-size fish in the river. This will last through the month of May. There are resident smallmouth that stay in the river all year as well.
Unexpected Catches: Don’t be surprised if you hook into channel catfish, northern pike, or even the occasional musky in the deeper pools close to Lake Erie.
Vermilion Lake Erie Fishing
Vermilion’s location on Lake Erie provides access to world-class walleye, yellow perch, and smallmouth fishing. Walleye fishing from early spring to late fall is excellent. Perch populations have been up and down in the past few years, but the fall is a great time to target them. Since the shoreline is rocky along Vermilion, smallmouth also call this area home!
Ruggles Reef: This series of underwater reefs is a legendary walleye hotspot, especially in spring and fall. Spawning walleye can be caught jigging here in the spring. Fish right after ice out. Smallmouth bass fishing is also popular on Ruggles Reef. Early in the spring, target 5-12 fow while they are in spawning patterns. Later in the year, they can be caught from 18-30 fow.
The Vermilion Sand Bar: In late summer and fall, schools of walleye roam the sandbar North of Vermilion. This area is a large sand flat that is prime for cruising fish heading East or West. Casting worm harnesses is effective in this area, especially in the heat of the summer.
Perch Pods: In late summer and fall, schools of jumbo yellow perch roam the waters off Vermilion. Don’t be afraid to try in closer on Ruggles Reef for perch in the fall!
Near-Shore Action: Shore anglers can catch everything from bass to sheepshead along the town’s beaches and breakwalls.
