We always strive to bring you the most up to date and informative fishing reports on Lake Erie. We cover walleye, steelhead, perch, and bass. Lake Erie is an awesome lake to fish, be prepared by reading our fishing reports before you go.
Walleye Fishing
Walleye fishing has remained great through all the bad weather we had earlier this month. Walleye have started to move around a little with the water cooling down to around 58 degrees.
In the Eastern basin there are mixed reports of where to find walleye. Around the Eastern tribs of Lake Erie, walleye are being found in the 40-50 ft. range, which is shallow for that area. At night, these fish are pushing bait along the piers and shorelines.
Around the Cleaveland and Lorain areas, there are schools of walleye from shallow (20-40 FOW) to deep (65+ FOW). In both of these areas, focus on bait. If you aren’t around any bait schools then it’s time to move.
Islands – Huron: The bite remains offshore for the most part. NE side of Kelleys Island has fish and so does 42-45 FOW between Huron and Vermilion.
Most anglers are trolling all of these areas between 1.5-2.2 MPH. It just depends on what the fish want on that particular day. Dipsy divers are still producing, but most have switched to crankbaits.
If you are scoping, fish these same areas. The big fish are mixed in and you can sharpshoot them out of the schools. This is the by far the best technique to catch constistently bigger fish.
Perch Fishing
Perch fishing has remained excellent since the cooldown. Look for this to only get better as the water cools more.
Lorain – close to the breakwalls has been great this week. Shiners on spreaders are catching most of the perch.
Islands – Green Island, Rattlesnake Island, and Kelleys Island have been producing the best bites. Remember, these fish move around a lot so marking them is key. If you are not marking fish, it’s time to move.
Steelhead
What a disapointing start to the season. This is solely due to no rain this fall. We have had 1 good push of fish and that’s it. There are however large groups of fish staging at the river mouths waiting for rain. This is a great place to cast from shore or troll little cleo lures.
Bass
I had the opportunity to fish for smallmouth and largemouth last weekend. The bite was fantastic. If you want to catch fish, think about the places you go in the spring time to catch bass. Shallow points with current and the first drop off structure is holding fish. Dropshot was by far the best producing bait.
